Every living plant produces naturally occurring chemical compounds. These compounds can have positive or negative affects on the human body. For example, tobacco contains nicotine, which is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, and begins affecting the human brain in less than 7 seconds. Nicotine stimulates the release of a hormone called epinephrine, which stimulates the nervous system. Coffee contains caffeine, and Marijuana contains THC. The THC levels found in Marijuana often vary from species to species, and within the same species, depending on a variety of factors.
So the answer to “how do essential oils work”, could be as simple as saying… they work as effectively as everything else in nature. However, essential oils are highly concentrated. Just as it requires over 5,000 pounds of rose petals to get 8 ounces of rose oil, or 15,000 pounds of balsam fir to obtain one gallon of balsam oil, it takes over 1300 pounds of clove buds to collect only 5 ounces of clove oil. This equates to less than 2 drops of clove oil per pound of raw material. We also know through years of research, when plants are steam distilled at low temperatures and only the smallest compounds are collected (leaving the heavier matter behind), the medicinal compounds collected are potent, pure, and powerful.
Aromatic rings of carbon and hydrogen are found throughout essential oil molecules. These aromatic rings are formed when 6 carbon atoms bond to another carbon atom on one side and double bond to another carbon on the other side. In order to accomplish this, the atoms are arranged in a circular fashion. To complete the structure, a hydrogen atom is connected to each carbon—also arranged in a circle. When 6 carbon atoms and 6 hydrogen atoms bond together in this fashion, the electrons that are otherwise “wedded” to an atom become free to roam within the molecule and are shared by the other atoms. These electrons begin to zip around from one atom to another millions of times per second. This activity is one of the sources of electromagnetic frequencies that have been measured in therapeutic grade essential oils. The additional energy carried by the electrons dashing around within the molecule is known as resonance energy.
